Thank you for the great information. Regret that I did not stumble on it till now. You should be proud to add your name to it. Sure you know it’s present dilapidated condition. Unfortunate that it was let down to this condition even though we had and have CM from this district. His priority is to build Amaravathi. Could we explore possibility of forming a group to explore possibility of renovating it. It is easier said than done. Let us give it a try. Umapathi Cattamanchi

PCR GOVT. HIGH SCHOOL, CHITTOOR Founded in 1854, the British Government recognised it as an Anglo-Vernacular Zillah School and ordered conduct of annual exams. James Neale became its first headmaster in the year 1856. Built in traditional Roman architecture on 2.94 acres with a total outlay of Rs.44730, the edifice reflects the impeccable colonial grandeur. The appeal is such that former President V.V. Giri came all the way to Chittoor to see the architectural spectacle. In 1900, it went into the hands of the Arcot Nawabs, who provided drinking water, toilets and a huge library. When Chittoor became the district headquarters in 1911, it was recognised as ‘Board High School’. It came to be known as ‘ZP High School’ when the Zilla Parishad was formed in the twenties. The school went under the control of District Planning Board in the early forties along with SV High School (Tirupati) and ZP High School (Madanapalle), and came back soon to the fold of Zilla Parishad again. It gained the name ‘PCR Government High School’ in the early sixties by retaining the initials of the former MLA P. Chinnam Reddy, who donated a huge sum for its development. The list of who’s who associated with the school is unending. Former President Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan taught here, yesteryear film actors Devika, K.R. Vijaya and TTD chairman D.K. Audikesavulu learnt their first alphabets here, while Sankarambadi Sundarachari, author of the State anthem ‘Maa Telugu Thalliki…’ studied as well as taught at the same institution. Noted musician Chittoor Subramanyam Pillai worked as a music teacher here for a brief period. Annie Besant, Sarojini Naidu and Rabindranath Tagore were among the great visitors to this school.
